Big, bony, and genetically disadvantaged, my feet are probably my least favorite feature. Even as a child I seemed to innately sense this inadequacy, having a deep empathy for Cinderella’s illustrated step-sisters as they struggled with that glass slipper.
It’s something of a joke in my household (although I guess “mommy and her big bird feet” could be considered a term of endearment), which is why I put a lot of effort into making the best of what I have—especially in the weeks leading up to spring.
A foot model I’ll never be, but well-heeled and smooth-soled, with ten thoughtfully groomed toes? Yes, that can and will be accomplished by the first sandal-suitable day. If I can do it, so can you. Just in time for sandal weather.
STEP 1: GET IN THE THICK OF IT
Behold, one of the most welcome beauty trends ever (cue angelic music): the foot mask. Slip these botanical acid- and extract-soaked booties on for 90 minutes and give yourself an excuse to actually put your feet up for an hour and a half. For reasons unknown to me, this kickstarts a magical exfoliation process that continues to take place naturally over the next several days. It doesn’t get better (or easier) than that!
STEP 2: KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Beauty sleep is a real thing, but you knew that already. Not only do our bodies desperately need regular intervals to rest and recharge, those hours of shut-eye are prime time for all those lotions and serums to do their best work (and like the miraculous foot mask, with practically no conscious effort from you).
STEP 3: PRETTY AS YOU PLEASE
You know those old nail clippers that you last saw in the vanity drawer, co-mingling with the eyeliner pencil shavings? Swipe ‘em with some alcohol and leave them for your SO. Then, treat yourself to your very own set of stainless manicure tools in their very own zip-up purse. Prefer to leave it all to a pro? Get in the habit of bringing your own tools to the salon, which will also remain well-organized and together for at-home touch-ups in between.
If you prefer DIY painting as I do, have fun with nail art possibilities. I love this easy-to-use pen by Sally Hansen and these 3D accents from Piggy Paint (Cruelty- and formaldehyde-free, Piggy Paint is a great kid-friendly brand to use with little ones).
STEP 4: STYLISH SHOES TO FILL
Speaking of Cinderella, runway reports say that “crystal-clear” shoes and sandals are having a moment right now. From see-through boots to practically invisible slides, treat yourself to a new pair when you’re ready kick off your Fabulous Feet 2018 Tour.
