In a nutshell, what do you do?
I find really cool pet products and sell them on Jet.com. It’s my job to make sure Jet has everything a Pet Parent would need.
What does your typical day look like?
I pour myself a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios and a cup of hot cocoa, then I start my day. I check my email and make sure I answer everything that’s urgent. Then I spend some time checking out the Walmart.com and Jet pages to make sure my category looks good. I like to know what types of promotions we’re running on the site each day to anticipate how they might impact my category. I run a quick sales report to see how the business is doing. And then, the real fun begins!
Some days I have vendor meetings, and some days I’m working to set up new items online. Since we run the business across Walmart.com, Jet.com, and Hayneedle, there is always something going on. You never really know what you’re walking into each day, which I think is awesome.
What’s your secret to creating strong relationships with vendors?
Daily communication. Whether I’m working with a new vendor to explain our process, or discussing yesterday’s sales with a current vendor, it’s really a partnership. We work together to find opportunities to boost sales and grow their business. We can’t win without each other.
What were you working on prior to joining Jet?
I was working at another retailer on the Home category. If you’d told me I’d soon be focusing on cat litter, I would have laughed. But there is so much to learn!
So, what was it that made you decide to join?
I was really looking for a place where I could be challenged every day. I wanted to work with smart people, and I needed a place that I wanted to come to everyday. You know how people say “If you find the right thing, work doesn’t feel like work”—I found everything I was looking for. Things are always changing. That’s what makes it so great! Today it’s cat litter, tomorrow it could be beauty.
How would you describe the culture at Jet?
Bold. Exciting. Dynamic. Chill. There are flexible work schedules, and there’s lots of energy and excitement streaming through the office. There is so much going on all the time, you feed off of that! You make an impact with everything you do, which is a pretty powerful thing.
Has anything surprised you about your job?
The amount of responsibility I was given from Day 1. We have this section on the site called The Puppy Shop. It is a curated shop where our Puppy Parents can find everything they need for their pup; from the essentials to toys and treats for spoiling them. My second day on the job, I redesigned the shop and got to curate the products to create a better shopping experience for our customers. It was the best learning experience!
The cool thing about Jet is that you have complete ownership of your category. There’s no problem that’s too big or too small for me to dive into and solve.
Any unexpected perks of working on the Pet team?
A few weeks ago, we needed images of pets for Jet.com. What better way to get them than to have a Yappy Hour! We invited Jet employees to come to a local dog park with their furry friends. We had a photographer there to take pictures. Dogs were playing with dogs, people were playing with dogs; there were so many toys and treats. It was a great event and we got so many good photos.
What’s it like working in Hoboken?
The best of both worlds. You are super close to the city, but away from the crowds and the smells. And there are so many good restaurants!
Where do you see Jet in five years?
As a company, we’re working to shape the way people shop online and make it easy for customers to find great stuff. We want customers to be able to shop for their basics as well as specialty items that maybe they haven’t heard of before. We are constantly thinking about the way customers shop and how we can redefine it to make the online shopping experience best in class.
What’s one personal habit that helps you succeed?
Working out has really helped me. Sometimes it’s bright and early at home before my day begins, other days it’s a spin class after work. And on those really crazy days, it’s a yoga class during lunch. Remembering to take that hour or so for yourself will really go a long way. I am much more refreshed and energized after my workout. It’s a good thing for everyone!
Any advice for someone applying for a Category Specialist position?
Jet is so unique and unlike the competition. Really understanding the model and what makes it different is half the battle. We appreciate diversity so we love when people bring something different to the table that they’re proud of. Showing that you’re passionate and eager to learn never hurts either!
