It’s about to smell real festive in here.

When I say “Christmas smells,” you just know what I’m talking about. When you step into a room and you’re overwhelmed with warm fire, apple and pumpkin pies in the oven, pine needles starting to scatter around the base of the tree, mashed potatoes. It’s the smell of home, the smell of lovable family chaos, and all the food you’re about to stuff into your face.

So in the spirit of anyone who genuinely loves getting candles as gifts (*raises both hands*), these 5 holiday-scented babies are for you. You don’t have to actually be a good cook to make your apartment smell like you’re one.

Christmas cookie candle

Cookie exchange

I’m a huge sucker for anything that smells (or tastes) like cake and vanilla and cookies, so this is perfect for that friend with a sweet tooth. Cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, with a delicious sugar base note. Almost as good as the real thing.

Peppermint candle

Candy canes

Vanilla says Christmas, but so does peppermint. There’s nothing like crunching on a candy cane while watching your sister take forever to open her gifts, or sticking one in a mug of hot cocoa and letting it melt (if you didn’t know that was a thing, you’re welcome).

Campfire candle

Start the fire

If you don’t have a fireplace (or your family argues back and forth about who should make a fire until nobody does), then this will do the trick instead. Maybe place it next to that fireplace Netflix thing that they release every year, and it’ll be the next best thing.

Bourbon candle

Bottoms up

I know. I know, I know, I know. Bourbon isn’t a “holiday smell.” But maybe it is for some people, you know? This beautiful metallic holder adds a touch of festivity to any room, and the notes of cognac, plum, and leather will remind you of that first delicious holiday party cocktail. Not everyone is all about those food smells. This one is for you.
